Others have spent the best part of a century accumulating it directly onto their surface.\u003cspan class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchor\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis Anglo-Indian teak armchair, probably dating from the 1920s–40s, belongs firmly to the latter camp. Its construction is pleasingly straightforward: a tall framed back with three narrow vertical splats, a pierced upper rail of alternating circles, gently sweeping arms and long tapering front legs ending in small flared feet. Little pyramidal finials crown the back. There is decoration, but only just enough.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd then there is the surface.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat was once a considerably darker piece of teak has been worn, faded and weathered into something altogether more interesting. The old reddish-brown finish survives in protected corners and across the back, while elsewhere the timber has softened through shades of warm brown, dusty grey and almost silver. Across the seat are remnants of a wonderful pale turquoise paint, interrupted by stray marks of red, black and brown — none of it particularly explicable, and all the better for it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something rather romantic about furniture carrying its past this openly. The worn arms suggest countless hands; the seat looks as though it may at some point have been pressed into service in a workshop or studio; knocks, scratches and old paint marks record events we'll never quite reconstruct. It would be easy to call all of this patina, but here the word genuinely earns its keep.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eProbably made in India during the early-to-mid 20th century, the chair combines a broadly British furniture form with local teak and a directness of construction characteristic of Anglo-Indian furniture. Despite its rather far-flung beginnings, it's an extremely easy chair to place now. The teak has weathered considerably, with areas of fading, rubbing, scratches, knocks, old marks and remnants of earlier finishes throughout. Traces of pale turquoise, red and darker paint remain particularly across the seat.
