Carol Boyes Pewter Figural Catchall
Carol Boyes Pewter Figural Catchall
Originally intended as a spoon rest, which feels almost too literal. Today it makes far more sense as a place for the small possessions that accumulate around us—keys, jewellery, spectacles, the detritus of a day well spent.
Designed by celebrated South African artist Carol Boyes, the elongated female figure reclines with complete indifference to whatever is entrusted to her care. Keys, jewellery, spectacles, a favourite pen, the spoon from an afternoon espresso — she accepts them all with the same faintly amused expression.
Boyes had an extraordinary ability to distil the human form into something both sculptural and playful. Here, the body becomes the vessel itself, its softly modelled contours framing a textured black interior that contrasts beautifully with the satin finish of the pewter.
Originally conceived as a spoon rest, it feels altogether happier freed from the kitchen. On a bedside table, hallway console or desk, it performs admirably as a small catchall while remaining unmistakably a sculpture in its own right. Functional objects rarely possess this much personality.
A wonderfully collectible example from one of Carol Boyes' most recognisable series.
