Charlotte Rhead for Bursley Ware Table Lamp
Charlotte Rhead for Bursley Ware Table Lamp
There’s a certain confidence to Charlotte Rhead’s work that never really dates. It doesn’t whisper politely from the corner, it settles in and gets on with being looked at.
This example comes from her most assured period, likely late 1920s to early 1930s, when the language of tubelining had fully found its footing. The base carries that familiar raised outline, holding pools of earthy colour in place. Ochres, greens, soft terracottas. It feels grounded, almost agricultural in palette, but handled with a lightness that keeps it from ever feeling heavy.
The real surprise sits above. A hand-painted silk shade that mirrors the language of the base but loosens it slightly, like a sketch redrawn from memory. It’s not something you see often, and certainly not in this condition. The fabric still holds its colour beautifully, the brushwork still lively.
Switched on, the whole thing warms up in the best possible way. The glaze deepens, the shade glows, and what might read as decorative in daylight becomes quietly atmospheric in the evening.
It has been re-wired with a brass switched lamp holder and brown twisted silk flex, keeping things in period without feeling fussy. Ready to go straight into a room and earn its keep.
