A quietly imposing lambing chair in solid chestnut, likely early 20th century, with all the reassuring heft and slightly stubborn character that comes with it.

The form is archetypal — high-backed, deeply sided, almost architectural in its proportions — but there’s something a touch more personal in the execution. The shaping of the arms and crest rail feels gently improvised rather than strictly formal, as though it’s been worked out by eye rather than ruler. You can see the hand in it.

Construction is honest and unfussy. Pegged joints, visible fixings, a certain directness to how it all comes together. It doesn’t try too hard to be refined, which is precisely where its appeal lies.

The chestnut has taken on a rich, deep tone over time — somewhere between umber and oxblood — with a soft sheen across the edges where it’s been handled. There are small knocks and irregularities throughout, but they read as use rather than damage.

The seat has the option of a feather-filled cushion upholstered in a chenille fabric with a subtle woodgrain pattern — an unexpected but rather pleasing pairing. It softens the piece just enough without taking away from its solidity.

A chair that sits somewhere between utility and presence — less about comfort in the modern sense, more about enclosure, warmth, and a certain quiet authority in a room.
