A fine example of traditional Mexican equipal craftsmanship, this early 20th-century chair is handmade from woven cedar strips and rawhide. The distinctive barrel form, with its crisscross lattice base and rounded backrest, speaks to centuries of regional design—at once rustic, sculptural, and deeply functional.

The seat and back are clad in thick, hand-stitched leather, rich with patina from decades of use. The cedar supports, bound with natural fibres, retain their raw, organic edges, grounding the piece in its artisanal roots.

Equipal chairs have long been used in Mexican haciendas, cantinas, and domestic interiors, prized for their comfort and durability. This example, with its honest wear and characterful surface, captures the soulful imperfection of a handmade tradition that continues to resonate with modern collectors of folk and vernacular design.
