Folk Art Anglepoise Lamp
Folk Art Anglepoise Lamp
A wonderfully charismatic piece of British (or possibly European) folk engineering, this handmade anglepoise lamp captures the full poetry of utility, improvisation and time-worn materials. Conjured from salvaged timber offcuts, rusted hardware and a weighty wooden base, it’s a sculptural object first and a lamp second — the sort of thing that feels as though it emerged from a workshop, a farm bench or a painter’s loft rather than any formal design lineage.
The articulated arm is fashioned from two lengths of timber, joined with chunky bolts and a delightfully mismatched hinge at the foot. Layers of old cream paint — cracked, flaked and beautifully patinated — run across the arms, revealing earlier eras with every abrasion. The conical metal shade, with its stippled rust surface, adds another note of rough, honest texture.
Recently rewired with a twisted fabric flex, it retains its full folkloric character: the improvised proportions, the irregular wear, the intuitive engineering. It stands as a sculptural desk lamp, a one-off collectible of outsider design, or a conversation piece for any interior that favours the raw, the real and the handmade.
