Hand Carved Wooden Fedora Ashtray
Hand Carved Wooden Fedora Ashtray
Somebody once decided that the best way to make an ashtray was to carve an entire fedora hat from a block of wood. Thankfully, they did.
Likely made in Italy during the mid twentieth century, this wonderfully eccentric object blurs the line between folk art and sculpture. There are echoes of the whimsical carved wooden objects produced by Italian makers such as Alfonso Bini and Loris Marazzi, where familiar domestic forms were reimagined with wit and remarkable craftsmanship.
Originally intended as an ashtray, the hollowed crown still happily accommodates a cigarette, though today it feels far more interesting as a sculptural curiosity. Resting on a bookshelf, desk or coffee table, it has the sort of quiet presence that invites people to pick it up and ask questions.
The timber has mellowed to a rich warm tone over decades, acquiring an honest surface with small knocks, marks and age-related wear entirely consistent with its use. A beautifully odd object with just the right amount of wit...... you'd be unlikely to find another!
