Late 20th-Century Sculptural Desk in Mixed Woods
Late 20th-Century Sculptural Desk in Mixed Woods
A wonderfully idiosyncratic late 20th-century desk, hand-built from a medley of woods and shaped with an unexpectedly refined, almost Louis XV silhouette. The maker clearly had a romantic eye and a pragmatic toolbox: voluptuous cabriole legs and a sensuous undulating apron are paired with joints, seams and construction choices that feel charmingly direct, even crude in places — the kind of honest handwork that gives the piece its character.
The desk blends several varieties of wood, pine, beech and birch, creating shifting grains and tones across the body. Nowhere is this more striking than in the apron and drawer fronts, where dramatic growth rings read almost like topographical maps. The drawers run smoothly and sit cleanly within its sculpted surround.
It’s a desk that embraces contradiction: elegant in outline, disarmingly simple in execution, and full of warm, tactile presence.
