Mid-19th Century French Aubusson Tapestry

A monumental mid-19th century French tapestry, attributed to the Aubusson weaving tradition, with an extraordinarily elaborate architectural and foliate design worked across a wonderfully restrained palette of ochre, parchment, faded crimson and olive green.

At almost four metres wide, this is a serious piece of textile art. The composition is organised around a great circular central medallion, surrounded by scrolling acanthus, flowers, geometric borders and architectural devices. There is something almost ceiling-like about it — the symmetry and dense ornament recalling the painted and plasterwork decoration of a grand French interior.

Aubusson, in central France, has been synonymous with tapestry weaving for some six centuries. Its workshops were granted the collective title of Royal Manufacture in the 17th century and, following the Revolution, developed into a number of important independent manufactories during the 19th century. The period saw particularly significant production of flat-woven carpets using essentially the same basse-lisse, or low-warp, technique associated with Aubusson wall tapestries. The tradition and skills of Aubusson tapestry weaving are today recognised by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

This example is particularly appealing for its scale and unusually quiet colouring. Despite the extraordinary amount going on within the design, the faded earth tones prevent it becoming grandiose. Seen from a distance it reads almost as one enormous abstract pattern; up close, the complexity of the weaving and drawing reveals itself.

It also carries its age openly. There are a number of areas of historic wear and loss to the weave, including several more pronounced patches where the warp is visible. We've photographed these clearly. For us, they don't detract from the piece: on something of this age and scale they form part of its history and give the surface the slightly faded, timeworn character that makes an antique textile so compelling. It isn't being presented as a pristine museum textile.

Currently prepared for wall hanging, where its size makes it an exceptional backdrop to a room, it could equally be returned to use as a floor covering. The first photograph gives a good sense of its scale — this is less something to fill a space on a wall than something capable of defining the room around it.

Condition
Good antique condition consistent with its mid-19th century age. General fading, wear and historic marks throughout, with several localised areas of loss to the weave as photographed.
