Murano glass rarely whispers. When it wants attention, it simply turns the volume up on colour — and this piece does exactly that.
The shade is a lively tumble of colour suspended in glass: yellow as the dominant note, with splashes of cobalt, rust, amber and red scattered through it like confetti caught mid-air. Unlit, it already has presence. Switch it on and the whole thing glows warmly, the colours deepening and softening as the light passes through the glass.
The form is characteristically Italian. The glass shade sits within a simple circular cradle, held by a sinuous metal arm that curls and loops with a quiet bit of flourish. The metalwork carries a warm bronze-toned patina that complements the glass beautifully — decorative without becoming fussy.
This example comes from a series produced by Barovier & Toso in the late 1990s to early 2000s. While the overall design remains consistent, each shade is hand-blown and entirely individual. The pattern of coloured inclusions shifts from piece to piece, meaning no two lights are quite the same — each one a small variation on the same idea.
Three lights from this series are available individually. They work perfectly as single accents, but are perhaps even better used in a small run along a hallway or stair — a rhythm of colour rather than strict uniformity.
As with the best Murano work, it manages that neat trick of feeling both playful and sophisticated at the same time.
