Naive Gouache Still Life with Vessels
Naive Gouache Still Life with Vessels
A wonderfully cheerful naive still life, painted in gouache and arranged around a loose gathering of bottles, jugs and vessels. It’s a familiar still-life subject handled with absolutely none of the solemnity.
There’s a distant nod to Morandi in the simple assembly of everyday vessels, although here his famously restrained palette has been thoroughly abandoned. Turquoise, powder blue, lilac, pink, ochre and an unexpectedly sharp flash of green jostle against one another, with the forms picked out in wonderfully wobbly, dark drawn lines.
The painting has that particularly appealing quality found in good naive work: perspective is largely beside the point. Shapes overlap, edges wander and objects are flattened into areas of colour. The result feels somewhere between still life and abstraction, with an easy, instinctive quality that gives it plenty of character.
Nicely presented behind glass with a deep blue-grey mount and simple pale timber frame. At 71 × 63 cm, it’s also a very useful size — substantial enough to hold its own but compact enough to fill that awkward bit of wall that has been bothering you for years.
Jolly, colourful and pleasingly unprecious.
Condition
Good vintage condition. The painting presents well, with the minor marks and irregularities expected of an original work of this nature. The frame has some light age-related wear. Please refer to the photographs for detail.
