Oak Arts & Crafts Footstool in Eley Kishimoto Bouclé
Oak Arts & Crafts Footstool in Eley Kishimoto Bouclé
Some pairings feel accidental; others feel as though they were waiting a century to meet.
This low Arts & Crafts footstool began life around the turn of the twentieth century, when furniture was expected to be honest, useful and made to last. Its oak frame is sturdy and straightforward, elevated by a series of carved rails that introduce just enough rhythm and movement to prevent it becoming purely functional.
Nearly a hundred years later, Eley Kishimoto emerged at another turn of the century, bringing a distinctly graphic sensibility to textiles and fashion. Their work often explores repetition, pattern and movement — qualities that sit surprisingly comfortably alongside the ideals of the Arts & Crafts movement, despite the decades that separate them.
The pairing works because each element seems to recognise something in the other. The jagged, directional pattern of the jacquard bouclé echoes the carved detailing running through the stretcher rails below, creating a visual conversation between frame and upholstery. One is hand-carved oak; the other a contemporary textile. Both rely on rhythm, repetition and line.
The result is a piece that feels remarkably current. Equally useful as a footstool, fireside perch, window-seat companion or occasional bench, it has the sort of quiet versatility that good furniture tends to acquire over time.
A thoughtful marriage of two creative moments separated by almost a century, yet speaking remarkably similar languages.
