There are fruit bowls, and then there are fruit bowls that appear to require the collective effort of three solemn little attendants.

This wonderfully eccentric late 20th-century piece combines a deep aubergine-purple glass bowl with a hand-worked metal stand formed as three stylised figures, each standing shoulder-to-shoulder in support of their shared burden. Whether they're carrying a ceremonial offering, presenting tribute to an unknown deity, or simply helping out with the lemons is open to interpretation.

The contrast between the rich, translucent glass and the dark metal is particularly successful. The bowl itself has a generous, almost classical form, while the stand introduces a welcome dose of humour. The figures are rendered with remarkable economy — little more than a few bends of steel and a handful of simple features — yet somehow possess an unmistakable personality. They look mildly resigned to the task, which only adds to the charm.

Placed on a dining table, kitchen island or sideboard, it performs equally well as a fruit bowl, centrepiece or simply as a sculpture in its own right. Some objects insist upon being taken seriously. This one quietly suggests otherwise.

A delightfully playful decorative object with just enough absurdity to make you smile every time you walk past it.

Condition

Very good vintage condition overall. The glass bowl presents beautifully with only light signs of age and use commensurate with its vintage. The metal stand remains structurally sound and stable, with minor surface wear adding to its handmade character.
