Carole McDowall – Abstract Composition, c.1980s

A richly textured abstract painting by Cornish artist Carole McDowall, unfolding across a rhythmic grid of nine loosely defined panels. Each section hums with its own energy—gestural marks, scrapes, and stains in ochre, rust, umber and blue—yet the composition holds together with quiet confidence.

McDowall’s work, grounded in the coastal palette of the West Country, here leans towards the expressive and improvisational. There are echoes of post-war British abstraction, but filtered through something more personal, almost diaristic. Smears of black oil paint anchor the lower half like a storm surge, while other passages suggest weathered stone, saltwater, lichen.
