An octagonal folding side table with a particularly handsome display of timber. Its specimen-wood top is arranged in a radiating sunburst, with narrow wedges of honey, russet, chocolate brown and near-black meeting at a single central point. Changes in grain and colour give each segment its own character—a small collection of woods assembled with considerable purpose.

The geometry continues around the edge, where an incised diamond border neatly frames the more exuberant pattern above. Below, the warm reddish-brown base is built from hinged, framed panels, with visible wooden pegs and carefully fitted joints. Shaped arches open up the lower section, giving the table an architectural quality without making it feel heavy.

It belongs to the Anglo-Indian tradition of folding occasional tables, with the arched base recalling the Moorish forms associated with Hoshiarpur furniture. Its precise place of manufacture and date remain unconfirmed.

The top lifts off and the articulated base folds flat, an ingenious piece of construction that becomes apparent only when the table is taken apart. Fully assembled, it makes a beautifully proportioned stand for a lamp, a small sculpture or a drink—though covering too much of the top would seem a little ungrateful.

Condition

Surface wear consistent with age and use, including scratches, small knocks and variations in the finish, particularly to the top. Minor wear to edges and around the panel joints. Rich colour and visible grain throughout. The top is removable and the hinged base folds flat.
