Boheme is a large hand-worked wool tapestry by London textile artist Annie Sherburne, whose practice has spanned textiles, felt-making, rug making, jewellery and environmental design. Sherburne developed a reputation during the 1980s and 1990s for pushing traditional textile techniques into more expressive and experimental territory, later becoming particularly known for her innovative work with felt and sustainable textile processes.
The title feels entirely fitting. A radiant sun, fluttering dragonflies, swirling leaves and a great spiral bloom drift across a softly undulating ground like fragments of a dream recalled on a summer afternoon. There is a freedom to the composition that never tips into chaos. Every line wanders exactly where it ought to, guided by a maker with a deep understanding of both drawing and material.
What elevates the piece beyond its exuberant imagery is Sherburne's command of wool itself. The hand-dyed fibres create a wonderfully nuanced palette; hot pinks, coral reds, citrus greens and soft aquas glow against a quiet neutral ground. Up close, the tapestry reveals an extraordinary complexity of colour mixing and texture, each area subtly modulated through the density and direction of the stitched surface.
There is an optimism to the work that feels increasingly rare. Joyful without being naïve, decorative without being merely decorative, Boheme has the ability to animate a room in the way only textile art can — introducing colour, softness and movement all at once.
