A wonderfully eccentric artisan-made mirror, with an expressive hand-worked quality that sets it some distance apart from the usual sunburst.
The central arched mirror is surrounded by a corona of hand-formed iron rays, each drawn out into a gently wavering point. Rather than the regular geometry normally associated with sunburst mirrors, these have a wonderfully loose, organic quality — each slightly different from the next and retaining the evidence of being shaped by hand.
Three projecting candle sconces sit along the lower edge, each with a shallow dished drip pan and spike for holding a candle. Once lit, the flames are reflected in the mirror behind them, adding another dimension to what is already a particularly sculptural object.
The construction is especially appealing. Bent and welded iron, visible joins and subtly differing curves give it the unmistakable character of something made rather than manufactured. Each of the radiating elements is finished at its base with tightly wound copper wire, a small but very effective detail that introduces a warmer note against the darker metal.
The surface has been left largely as found, with mottling, oxidation and traces of old finish across the iron, while the copper has mellowed beautifully with age. An unusual and very characterful piece of studio metalwork — decorative in its own right, but considerably better with three candles burning.

Condition
Good vintage condition with age-related wear throughout. The iron displays areas of oxidation, spotting and surface variation, with further patination to the copper bindings and some minor age-related marking to the mirror plate. The aged surface has deliberately been retained rather than polished away. Please refer to the photographs for detail.
