Few designers have done more to elevate the everyday than Carol Boyes. Her work takes the most familiar domestic objects and quietly persuades them to become sculpture, often with just a single expressive gesture.

This corkscrew is a wonderful example. Cast in pewter, the elongated figure curves gracefully around the mechanism, transforming what could have been a purely functional object into something full of movement and personality. It sits comfortably in the hand, but just as happily on a bar cart or open shelf, where its sculptural silhouette can be appreciated between bottles.

There is a warmth to pewter that polished chrome or stainless steel rarely achieves. Softly lustrous rather than reflective, it develops a mellow patina with age that only enhances the tactile quality of the piece. The result is an object that invites use rather than discourages it.

Collectible in its own right, Carol Boyes' designs have become increasingly sought after for their ability to blur the line between art and utility. This is precisely the sort of object that makes opening a bottle of wine feel ever so slightly more ceremonial.

A beautifully considered piece of functional sculpture, equally suited to gifting or keeping close at hand.
