A monumental work on paper by Cornish artist Carole McDowall (b. 1940), considered part of the third wave of Cornish modernists. Measuring 125 cm wide by 118 cm high, the piece is constructed from six collaged panels, each carrying its own gestural energy while contributing to the larger composition.

Earthy ochres, umbers, and flashes of blue and black are worked into layered surfaces, the loose grid echoing the structure of the collage itself. The result is a painting that drifts between landscape and abstraction — evoking coastal strata, shifting skies, and the raw materiality of place.

McDowall’s practice carries the St Ives legacy into the late 20th century, extending its modernist lyricism through an experimental, tactile approach. This work stands as a striking example of that lineage: architectural in scale, immediate in touch.

Framed in simple timber under glass.
