Gerrit Rietveld Red and Blue Chair
Gerrit Rietveld Red and Blue Chair
Perhaps the most recognisable chair of the twentieth century, Gerrit Rietveld's Red and Blue Chair remains one of the defining icons of the De Stijl movement. Conceived in 1918 and later translated into its now unmistakable palette of black, red, blue and yellow, it represents furniture stripped back to its purest architectural elements—horizontal and vertical planes balanced in perfect equilibrium.
This example follows the classic proportions faithfully and is reassuringly solid in construction. Its provenance is unknown and it carries no Cassina label. What it does have is convincing age, accurate proportions and the sort of honest wear that only comes from decades of use.
What really appealed to me, however, was its condition.
Far from being pristine, the chair wears its history openly. The painted surfaces are scuffed, chipped and worn, with evidence of old, rather clumsy touch-ups carried out over the years. The blue seat bears scratches accumulated through decades of use, the red back retains the ghosts of previous repairs, and the yellow accents have softened through handling. Rather than detracting, this patina gives an object often associated with museum-like perfection a surprising warmth and humanity.
There's something rather satisfying about such an uncompromising exercise in geometric abstraction having lived such an ordinary, useful life. The wear softens the severity of the design and lends it a personality that a flawless example simply can't replicate.
Whether placed amongst contemporary interiors or alongside antiques and folk pieces, it remains one of those rare designs that is immediately recognisable yet never loses its ability to provoke conversation.
Condition
Good vintage condition with extensive cosmetic wear commensurate with age and use. Numerous scratches, chips and abrasions to the painted surfaces throughout, together with evidence of historic overpainting and touch-up work. Structurally solid and stable, with all wear contributing to its wonderfully lived-in character.
