At first glance, Holiday Vibes appears entirely abstract: a field of warm pinks and coral reds interrupted by a handful of drifting geometric forms. Spend a little longer with it, however, and figures begin to emerge.
The elongated shapes scattered across the composition suggest sunbathers stretched out on towels, reduced to their simplest elements and suspended within a haze of heat and colour. The effect is dreamlike, as though the scene is being recalled rather than observed — fragments of a beach, a body, a strip of shade, all softened by memory and summer light.
The palette does much of the work. Layers of pink, watermelon, salmon and mauve create an atmosphere of warmth without ever becoming saccharine. There is a distinctly antipodean quality to it; the colours feel sun-bleached rather than sun-drenched, bringing to mind the easy-going coastal culture of Sydney and its long relationship with modernist art and design.
What makes the painting particularly successful is its ambiguity. It never settles entirely into abstraction, yet neither does it fully describe the scene. Instead, it hovers somewhere in between, capturing the sensation of a languid afternoon more effectively than a literal depiction ever could.
Presented in its original timber frame with gilt slip, it is a quietly optimistic work with an unmistakably relaxed character.
