Italian Carved Alabaster Uplighter Table Lamp
Italian Carved Alabaster Uplighter Table Lamp
A beautifully carved Italian alabaster uplighter dating from the 1970s.
Entirely fashioned from richly veined alabaster, the lamp comprises a broad flared trumpet shade supported by an elegantly turned and fluted column, all resting on a generous domed base. The stone displays a wonderful palette of warm creams, honey tones and russet veining that becomes even more pronounced once illuminated, bathing the room in a remarkably soft, atmospheric light.
The design strikes an appealing balance between classical architecture and Italian postmodernism. The segmented column recalls a carved stone baluster or bamboo cane, while the generous bowl-shaped shade gently diffuses light upwards, allowing the natural translucency of the alabaster to become the star of the piece.
By day it reads as a sculptural object; once switched on, it transforms into something altogether warmer, the veins and mineral inclusions slowly revealing themselves as the stone begins to glow.
A wonderfully tactile lamp with an unmistakably Italian sensibility.
Condition
Very good vintage condition. The alabaster is in excellent order with only a couple of tiny nibbles to the outer rim of the shade, as photographed. Rewired with an inline switch and ready for use.
