John Makepeace Studio Coffee Table

One of the most appealing aspects of early John Makepeace furniture is how little it appears to be trying. Before the extraordinary sculptural commissions, before Parnham College and international acclaim, Makepeace was exploring how furniture could be reduced to its essential parts without becoming cold or anonymous.

This coffee table belongs to that period.

Designed in the early 1960s and retailed through Heal's, the model became Makepeace's first commercial success. In later interviews he cited a low, glazed timber table sold through Heal's as the piece that helped launch his career. The design distilled many of the ideas that would underpin his later work: honest construction, visual lightness, economical use of material and an emphasis on function over ornament.

While most surviving examples are found in pine, this table is an original studio-made version, bearing a stamped maker's mark to the underside of one of the structural bearers. The timber appears to be a richly coloured hardwood—possibly afromosia or a similar species—though the exact timber remains unconfirmed. Whatever the material, it elevates the design considerably, lending warmth and depth to what is otherwise an exercise in disciplined restraint.

The construction is deceptively simple. Four square-section legs support an exposed frame, each junction celebrated rather than concealed through visible fixings and crisp architectural detailing. Above sits a removable square glass top, newly replaced to the original specification. The transparency allows the structure beneath to remain the visual focus, creating a table that occupies space without ever feeling heavy.

More than sixty years after its introduction, the design remains remarkably fresh. Its proportions, clarity of line and absence of stylistic affectation mean it sits as comfortably in a contemporary interior as it would have in a Heal's showroom of the 1960s. That quality—the ability to transcend fashion rather than merely reflect it—is perhaps the clearest indication of Makepeace's talent.

A significant early work by one of Britain's most influential furniture designers, and a rare opportunity to acquire a studio-made example of a design that helped establish his reputation.

Condition

Excellent vintage condition.

The timber frame has been lightly refreshed and presents beautifully, retaining a rich colour and patina commensurate with age. The glass top has been professionally replaced with a new piece cut to the original specification. The maker's stamp remains visible to the underside.
