This extraordinary hand-carved figure does exactly that. It's difficult to decide whether this is sculpture masquerading as furniture, or furniture that accidentally became sculpture, but it certainly possesses the kind of presence that makes provenance almost secondary. There is certainly a Japanese sensibility to its broad, expressive face and compact reclining form, yet it resists being neatly categorised. Instead, it simply gets on with being utterly compelling.
Carved from a substantial block of timber, every sweep of the gouge remains visible beneath a warm, honeyed patina. The softened features, exaggerated ears and half-smiling, half-weary expression give it a curious humanity—as though it has witnessed rather a lot over the years and has quietly decided not to judge.
It feels entirely at home in the domestic landscape. Beside a favourite chair with a drink resting on its broad head. Holding a vase of unruly tulips. Keeping company in a hallway or quietly anchoring the end of a sofa. It occupies space with complete ease, asking very little while giving a room something difficult to define.
