Bernard Rooke never really made polite ceramics. His pots tend to look as though they’ve been unearthed rather than simply thrown — a little ancient, a little architectural, and entirely uninterested in behaving like ordinary pottery.
This is one of his more sculptural pieces. Broad and disc-like in silhouette, it has real presence, with a generous width that makes it read almost like a ceramic plaque with a vessel built into it. A small collar at the top takes stems, while the wide face becomes a canvas for Rooke’s unmistakable language of carved decoration.
Across the surface run concentric medallions, spirals and geometric relief motifs pressed deep into the clay. They feel vaguely archaeological — somewhere between sun symbols and mechanical cogs — a sort of imagined antiquity that Rooke returned to again and again in his work.
The glaze is classic Rooke: sandy ochre layered with iron-rich rust tones, with mossy green creeping across the shoulders and sides. Because the decoration is so deeply carved, the glaze pools and breaks across the surface, leaving shadows in the recesses and a wonderful sense of depth. It’s the kind of pot that shifts character slightly as the light moves across it.
Rooke was one of the more distinctive voices in British studio pottery during the mid-twentieth century, developing a visual language that sat somewhere between brutalism, folk symbolism and architectural relief. Pieces like this feel less like simple vessels and more like small ceramic sculptures.
A couple of stems work nicely — but truthfully it holds its own perfectly well without them.
