Louis Poulsen PH5 Pendant Lamp
Louis Poulsen PH5 Pendant Lamp
A quietly iconic Danish pendant, designed by Poul Henningsen for Louis Poulsen in 1958. The PH5 remains one of the most resolved lighting designs of the 20th century — a careful orchestration of layered shades that diffuse and soften light in all directions, eliminating glare while retaining a sense of presence.
This example has clearly been part of a life rather than sitting on a shelf waiting for one. The painted surfaces show honest wear throughout: areas of loss, oxidisation, and scattered marks that speak to decades of use. None of it feels careless — more the gentle accumulation of time doing its thing. The result is something far more interesting than a pristine reissue: a piece with texture, history, and a bit of attitude.
The internal reflectors retain their original colourway, with the characteristic blue and red elements still doing their quiet technical work, balancing warmth and diffusion. Structurally sound and fully functional.
In contemporary settings, it does what the PH5 has always done best: provides a soft, even pool of light while holding its own as an object. Equally comfortable over a dining table, in a kitchen, or hanging slightly lower in a more intimate corner.
A classic — but one that hasn’t tried to stay young.
