Somewhere between furniture and sculpture, this extraordinary armchair has been carved from great twisting sections of root wood, its naturally occurring forms worked into a surprisingly coherent place to sit.
There is very little conventional furniture-making going on here. The back grows rather than rises, the arms loop and swell, and great holes have been left between the timber. It is these voids that make the chair particularly interesting. For all its considerable bulk, it feels remarkably open.
There is something distinctly sculptural about the treatment of mass and negative space. Henry Moore inevitably comes to mind – not because the chair attempts to imitate his work, but because it shares that fascination with piercing a solid form until the space passing through it becomes as important as the material itself. From some angles it is a chair; from others, a rather magnificent piece of biomorphic sculpture that happens to accommodate a person.
The surface has been heavily worked and polished, retaining knots, fissures, changes in grain and all the peculiarities of the original timber. Its warm reddish-amber colour and glossy finish only exaggerate the sense of something geological or bodily.
And it is enormous. At 110cm wide and substantially constructed, this is not a chair inclined to disappear politely into a corner. It needs a little territory around it and is all the better for it.
A genuinely singular piece of furniture.

Condition
Very good vintage condition with wear and irregularities consistent with the nature of the material and its age. Natural fissures, knots, small cracks and variations occur throughout the root wood, alongside areas of historic filling and repair. There is some variation and wear to the glossy surface finish. Structurally substantial, solid and ready for use. Please refer to the detailed photographs as these form an important part of the condition description.
