Nigerian Geometric Carved Hardwood Coffee Table.
Nigerian Geometric Carved Hardwood Coffee Table.
An African hardwood coffee table with a considerable appetite for pattern. Its rectangular top is worked with alternating bands of diamonds, triangles and small pyramidal cuts, enclosed within a broad, plain border. The repetition has the rhythm of a woven textile, translated into wood with rather more resistance.
The carving continues below: two faceted supports are ringed with rows of notched decoration, while the connecting stretcher and broad trestle feet carry their own geometric panels. Even at floor level, the maker seems to have objected to leaving much undecorated.
The hardwood has a rich reddish-brown colour, with darker recesses and worn highlights that bring the individual cuts into relief. Small variations in the carving give the surface a lively, hand-worked character; light catches one facet and leaves its neighbour in shadow.
Likely dating from the mid-20th century, the table bears the impressed stamp ‘ACCU LTD AMAWBIA’ to the edge of its top, indicating an origin in Amawbia, southeastern Nigeria. Its precise date and the history of the maker remain unconfirmed.
