Petite French Glass & Enamel Pendant Light
Petite French Glass & Enamel Pendant Light
A petite French pendant with a broad-brimmed shade and a distinct silhouette. A shallow cream enamel canopy sits above tapered glass patterned with closely spaced dots, held within a slender metal framework and finished with brass details. The proportions are particularly pleasing: a wide, almost floating disc above a compact lantern-like body.
It captures that classic 1950s French sensibility—practical materials given a little wit, and construction light enough to leave air around the individual parts. There is an echo of the playful geometry associated with Mathieu Matégot, although the maker is unconfirmed and the comparison is one of character rather than attribution.
The dotted glass gives the light its graphic rhythm. Unlit, the pattern sits softly against the pale yellow-cream surface; illuminated, it becomes more pronounced as the glass takes on a warm glow. Thin supporting rods trace the sides, meeting a patinated circular rim below, while small rounded finials punctuate the otherwise spare construction.
At just 25 cm across, it would work beautifully over a small table, in a hallway or suspended beside a bed. Wired with brown braided flex and a brass B22 bayonet lamp holder, it brings considerable character to a modest amount of ceiling.
Condition
Wear consistent with age and use, including small marks, scratches and minor chips to the enamel shade, with some unevenness to the rim. Patination, spotting and wear to the metal fittings and lower ring. Please refer to the detail photographs.
