Spanish Brutalist Carved Pedestal Side Table
Spanish Brutalist Carved Pedestal Side Table
A Spanish pedestal table with a decidedly medieval disposition. Its thick circular top sits on a slender carved stem, above a heavily worked base and three splayed feet. At 60 cm high, it has the proportions of a small architectural fragment that has found useful employment beside a chair.
The carving is its great attraction. Broad scoops spiral around the stem, deep cuts articulate the base, and a grid of blunt incisions runs down the feet. The top’s roughly scalloped edge retains pronounced tool marks. There is little interest in smoothing away the evidence of how it was made.
Its dark finish and insistent ornament give it a Gothic Revival flavour, interpreted with the muscular simplicity of Spanish brutalist furniture. A little ecclesiastical, perhaps, but perfectly willing to hold a drink. Equally effective as a pedestal for a small sculpture or a favourite object.
