Title: Untitled (Lichen Rocks), 1990s
Medium: Original photograph exposed onto canvas using light-sensitive emulsion
Dimensions: 84 × 64 cm
A dark field of encrusted forms — rocks thick with lichen, or something older still. This original photograph, exposed by hand onto raw canvas using light-sensitive emulsion, reads less like a document than a relic. The process is visible in the surface: matte, granular, and slightly unpredictable, as if the image had grown there slowly, over time.
Taken (and made) in the 1990s, but resistant to any era, the composition compresses depth — a tangle of natural formations rising to the picture plane, rendered in a nearly abstract thicket of tone and texture. It evokes 19th-century expedition photography, yet its materiality feels distinctly post-industrial. Something between geology and memory.
Hung unframed, this piece operates as both image and object. Pairs well with Brutalist form, modernist restraint, or rooms that welcome a little quiet wilderness.
