A substantial studio pottery table lamp, with a beautifully restrained glaze that does most of the talking.
The tall, gently shouldered ceramic body is decorated in earthy olive, cream and deep brown, with fine irregular lines incised through the glaze. They run loosely around the form, crossing and overlapping rather than following any rigid pattern — somewhere between grasses, scratches and rapid pencil marks. The effect is particularly good at this scale, giving an otherwise simple vessel form a surprising amount of movement.
The glaze graduates from pale cream and soft green towards richer brown at the neck, with the mottling and slight variation associated with individually made studio ceramics. Signed to the underside with an incised potter's mark.
Particularly pleasing is the survival of its original tall fabric shade. Its natural woven cloth and braided trim suit the pottery remarkably well and give the lamp a very complete period appearance. When illuminated, the shade takes on a much warmer colour and throws a soft amber light across the ceramic beneath.
The lamp has been sympathetically updated with a new brass lamp holder and black fabric-covered flex, allowing the original pottery and shade to remain very much the focus.
A handsome piece of post-war studio pottery: decorative without being fussy, and large enough to work equally well on a side table, console or low piece of furniture.
Condition
Very good vintage condition with minor surface marks and signs of age consistent with use. The original shade has some gentle age-related wear and variation to the fabric, but presents very well and is an important part of the lamp. Please refer to the photographs for details.
