Yoruba Osanyin Medical Staff, Nigeria, Early-20th Century
Yoruba Osanyin Medical Staff, Nigeria, Early-20th Century
A striking iron Osanyin staff from Nigeria, mounted on a substantial timber base, its surface marked by time and ritual handling.
Within Yoruba belief, Osanyin is the orisha associated with herbal knowledge and healing. Such staffs traditionally served as spiritual and symbolic instruments, representing the unseen forces of nature and the medicinal power held within plants and the natural world. The encircling birds are understood as messengers between earthly and spiritual realms, their watchful forms suggesting protection, knowledge and connection to forces beyond the visible.
Here, the iron has weathered into a rich, deeply textured surface, its rusted patina softening the once-sharp lines into something organic and almost animated. Each bird is individually worked, their silhouettes slightly irregular, lending the whole structure a rhythmic, almost processional feel. Mounted to a heavy, timeworn timber block, the piece reads beautifully as sculpture in its own right — an object equally at home in an interior setting as a powerful sculptural presence or as part of a thoughtfully assembled collection.
